Are you having a hard time finding the right screenplay prompt? Then, use one of the following ideas to make your screenplay writing experience much easier!
As a screenplay writer, you will know how hard it can be to develop an idea. Writer's block can overtake even the greatest authors, leaving you uncertain where to take your next story. We have put together some popular writing prompts to help you make quicker progress on this issue. Use these to help you get your idea off the ground so that you can begin glowing again and feeling confident in your writing projects!
The first of our screenwriting prompts we want to bring forward is a popular idea: someone waking up without remembering what happened the night before. You can take this in all manner of directions. They could wake up in a place that they do not know. They might wake up sleeping next to someone who, to their foggy mind, is a stranger. They might even be covered in blood! You choose.
This particular writing prompt is about starting with someone making a very bad discovery. It could be that they found that their partner was cheating on them. It might be like they have discovered that their company is involved in illegal activity. You can take this in just about any direction that you want. Start the prompt with someone making a shocking discovery, then build upon their reaction and what happens next.
Another good choice for our screenplay writing prompts is to think about the story starting with an investigation. Someone could be in a room waiting for the detective to arrive or mid-interrogation. It could even be something like a kidnapping; someone wakes up tied to a chair, that kind of thing. Consider the type of interrogation you would like to start with, and then you can soon begin to build out the plot and the purpose from this point.
If you want to go down a more relationship-themed route, go for something like a blind date. It could be something like an individual waiting for his ‘dream date’ to turn up – only for someone he knows to walk through that door. It could be someone he was with before – for comedic purposes, what about an ex-husband/wife? – or it could be someone that they thought they hated. The possibilities for this one are endless in both serious and comedic tones.
One of the best screenplay writing prompts is about someone writing. Try to channel your inner frustrations when you get writer's block. Think about how annoyed you get when you get the words to come onto the screen/page. This prompt is great for screenwriters as you can invoke your thoughts, feelings and emotions when you are finding it hard to start a story. What better inspiration for a story than your current predicament?
Start with one of the above writing prompts, and you should find that the ideas start flowing. These should be enough to get you started and see meaningful progress. Your next question comes down to how developed you want this to be. Is this just a prompt to get the ideas flowing? Or is it the start of your next masterpiece? You decide!
